Green Printer - Without Ink and Paper!!!

This is without doubt a very interesting product, high technology and environmentally friendly machine. It operates without ink and paper (save the planet because no paper is used). This printer is called PrePeat printer. The PrePeat printer adopts a thermal head to print out on specially made plastic sheets. The special paper can be used again and again up to 1000 times. It also can be erased!!! You just need to know how it is done... I bet everybody will be very curious on how this eco printer work... Digital Signatures Build Greater Efficiency in Engineering

Do you have any idea what is Digital Signature? Frankly, I've heard about digital signature recently in an email discussion in my university. However, I did not pay that much attention about it. I don't really know much about it until I receive an email from Ashley, from Arx.com, a company specializing in providing Digital Signature services based in United States. She briefly explained to me about digital signature and benefits it brings to architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). After reading her explanation, I understood the importance of digital signature especially to the engineering industry. The application of it will speed up verification and approval process for technical drawings and documents regardless of the geographic location of engineers and managers.

While organizations across industries have suffered from the worldwide financial crisis, the engineering market took an especially difficult hit. In the face of the crisis, engineering firms including chemical engineering firms are dealing with a serious decline in projects, and a tense rise in competition.

Presenting my technical paper in ICPEAM2010 conference

Last week, I attended ICPEAM2010 (SOMCHE2010) which was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) from 15 to 17th June 2010. I presented a research paper was related to my Ph.D studies. I only managed to attend on the 3rd day due to other unavoidable circumstances. I managed to meet up with few friends from other universities and it was good to catch up and share stories/updates.

As the conference was organized by Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and held in KLCC, it is expected to be a grand one. The facilities and organizers were very excellent. As a participant and presenter, I can say the conference was a successful one. On top of getting my paper presented, I was lucky to get my paper published in Journal of Applied Science (JAS) special edition in conjunction with ICPEAM2010. So, up to now, I have 3 conference papers and 1 journal in hand. I think that is not bad for me as I'm still in my second semester. I have 2 drafts of technical paper to be submitted to international journal with my supervisor now and I'm hoping that she can give it to me as soon as possible.

Well, I would like to share some photos from the conference. Thanks to Joseph, my wife's new research assistance who attended the conference with me.

Me and Nabeel, after lunch as well. Nabeel is finishing his Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He is from Iraq and is an expert in Matlab. He maybe continuing his Ph.D soon.

Isn't that comfortable. Enough tables and chairs for participants to rest in between presentation sessions.

KLCC has a nice place to run not only a conference but also multiple exhibitions.

Do I missed my previous job?

It has been been 1 year 11 months and 12 days since I resigned from my position as a process engineer. If you ask me do I miss my previous job, I'll say definitely yes. If given the opportunity to be an engineer again, will I become one? I'm still keeping in touch with my colleagues, supervisors, plant operators and technician from my previous work place. It's good to stay in touch with them and to know how the company is progressing.

Well, the answer is it depends. I don't want to be that type of engineer for the rest of my life. However, I want to be an engineer once in a while. Let say, maybe 3 months a year. Would that be possible? I'm not sure.

I am now finally in a position that I dream off years ago. I'm pursuing my Ph.D and working on to be a chartered engineer. It's not easy and it's certainly tough. With my present position, I can have better control of what I want to do. I enjoy writing, publishing my work, doing research, supervising students and teaching as well.

But, to be a more hands on engineer, I need to spend more time doing consultancy jobs. That will get me closer to the plant, refinery and industry which I missed very much. I missed the crude palm oil smell while I was working in Pasir Gudang. I missed the gas and condensate smell while I was a chemical engineer leading few projects in Kerteh, Trengganu. I also missed the adrenaline while sitting in the helicopter while traveling to several offshore platforms performing bottle test. To add some more, I missed the fantastic 5 star food that was serve in Petronas offshore rigs. The basic point is I missed those experiences.

I have made it a point, after I complete my doctorate degree, I'm going to allocate sometime doing some consultancy jobs that suit my knowledge, skill and experiences. I have identified an area I'm going to establish myself in. With that in mind, I hope I can get more and more industrial exposure. Besides gaining more experiences, I can also share them with my readers (of this blog).

Experiment #1 + Doing Some Work in Laptop

Following my experiment #1 attempt yesterday, here is a short video showing some of the activities I'm doing while observing my experiment. Actually, while running the experiment, I was quite busy monitoring everything from the upstream to the downstream. Off course, as mentioned in previous post, I've stated some problems that I need to overcome. The video quality is quite poor because it is taken from my Sony Erickson K810i hand phone (not my Blackberry Storm 9500 or Panasonic Lumix digital camera).



The video was captured while waiting for the temperature of the furnace to get down after I shut off the system. I'm glad that I've started the experiment today instead of Monday. Now, I can think and plan something to overcome the identified problems.

Experiment #1 Was Interesting

At this very moment, I'm at the lab. I've just tested my experimental rig baby. I have looked forward to conduct the first test run since I received the quartz tube reactor from United Kingdom 2 weeks ago. After adjusting the fittings, data logger, syringe pump and other related issues concerning the experiment, I decided to run experiment #1 on a beautiful Friday afternoon. This is 3 days earlier than what I planned. I initially planned to run the experiment on Monday.



The main objective of the test run today is to identify any problems. Yes, there will definitely be some problems when we run an experiment.

Today's effort can be considered a fruitful one. I identified few problems that I need to take care off. Here are some of the outcomes:

1. The thermocouple and data logger works fine.
2. The vacuum fitting for thermocouple connection also looks good.
3. The data logger software is marvelous.
4. The heating tape has done its job. It showed me high reading at 320oC.
5. The fitting from the syringe pump to the steel tubing definitely needs highest attention. I need to search a way to improve the connection.
6. The furnace temperature reading is OK but not consistent with my thermocouple reading. That's fine. I'm expecting that.
7. The syringe pump needs some attention too. It's quite confusing to adjust and run it.
8. I have not tested the experiment with nitrogen as carrier gas. Without carrier gas, I can observe bubbles from the beaker containing water.
9. I burnt my finger while accidentally touching the heating tape. One finger only.
10. I need to becareful with the thermocouple wire because it create spark when it touches the angle iron end.
11. I need to apply some quartz wool at the inlet and outlet of the reactor to avoid waste of heat energy from the furnace. Without quartz wool the thermocouple reading is lower by about 100oC plus.

Those are some of the findings I discovered today and I'm pleased with it. I'm now waiting for the reactor to cool down and I will check the quartz tube end, o-ring, fittings etc.
