Sharing Chemical Engineer's Challenging, Exciting, Interesting and Stimulating Life...

Chemical Engineering Chat Via Facebook

Today, while working in my lab, a reader of my blog (Chemical Engineering World) or maybe Facebook Chemical Engineer Rocks Group, approached and chatted with me. Let's identify him as OKN. He is currently a final year chemical engineering student and is planning his future. I have not able to ask him further but I think he is from the African continent.

OKN, you know who you are. I hope you are all right that I share our informative chat here for the sake of other chemical engineering students. I have edited/improved some of the sentences to make it clearer for you to read. Check it out...

OKN - 5:26pm: Good morning. How are you?

Zaki - 5:26pm: Hi, fine thanks

OKN - 5:26pm: Cool

Zaki - 5:27pm: :)

OKN - 5:27pm: What are you working on right now

Zaki - 5:27pm: I'm testing my new temperature controller. Looks like it works fine... ;)

OKN - 5:28pm: Nice work. On what field do u specifically base on?

Zaki - 5:28pm: Catalysis and reaction engineering. Trying to convert glycerol to some useful product.

OKN - 5:30pm: I am a chemical engineer but still in school my final year.

Zaki - 5:31pm: Oh! That's cool. Good luck to you.

OKN - 5:31pm: What advise do u have for me on my futher studies?

Zaki - 5:37pm: Choose which field you are interested in. Get a good supervisor whom have lots of research grant/money. Explore the area of renewable energy.

OKN - 5:38pm: But u can serve as my supervisor...since we study related course

Zaki - 5:39pm: Hmmm... I'm still doing my Ph.D. Maybe later, after I complete my Ph.D I can be your supervisor. Hahaha...

OKN - 5:40pm: U really inspire me a lot....u start now cos i really appreciate the little u have

Zaki - 5:40pm: Oh... Thanks... But what do mean by start now?

OKN - 5:41pm: While still doing ur phd. I am seriously confuse of my field.

Zaki - 5:42pm: O ok. So, what is your interest?

OKN - 5:42pm: I am seeing it as if i have waisted my time studying chemical eng.

Zaki - 5:42pm: Oh no. You are doing great. You just need somebody to help and guide you show the way...

OKN - 5:43pm: I am tinking of going into oil sector but i think i nid advise from someone to put me back in my field cos i rily want to be self dependent.

Zaki - 5:44pm: Oil and gas is lucrative sector. If you can be an expert in certain areas in the oil and gas, that's fantastic. Work with somebody, and then after few years, build your own company.

OKN - 5:46pm: But i have no much knowledge about dat sector,if u can help me i will appreciate

Zaki - 5:46pm: Oh... maybe you can be an expert in specialty chemical for offshore oil and gas application. Since you are a chemical engineer, that suits quite well. Try and google what is specialty chemical.

OKN - 5:47pm: It's ok. I will do dat.

Zaki - 5:48pm: You can also try to cover some other areas such as safety and health, as well as maintenance, or process engineering for oil and gas application or corrosion aspect or NDT.

OKN - 5:54pm: What suggestion of field of chemical eng. Do have for me to study for my masters degree.

Zaki - 5:54pm: OK ... another interesting and lucrative area is safety, health and environmental
If you focus on some specific areas under environmental...that will be good as well. People expert in environmentals make lots of money.

OKN - 5:58pm: So u mean i shud study environmental as a course.

Zaki: 5:58pm: Yep... Maybe you can also study some specific areas under environmental...such as Water, Air, Safety etc. Once you be an expert, example: Water expert, those who are concern with water impact, environmental will seek for your advise etc. Maybe they want to analyze water river etc.

OKN: 6:01pm: In drilling, guess i will be of more relevance.....how?

7:48pm: Yes. Drilling is relevant to you too. However, you need to learn more about it
that will be pretty much covered in Petroleum Engineering.

The chat ended because suddenly I have something coming up. I hope OKN got something from the short chat. Cheers...

5 Tips for Fresh Process Engineers

I received an email from a fresh engineer 7 days ago. After reading his email, I thought of answering his question inside my blog (off course for the benefit of other young engineers and those who'll be graduating soon).

The email message was something like the this:
"I'm Fahmi. I know you from your chem-eng blog. I want to ask for your advice. I just started working as a production engineer in an oleochemical plant in Klang. As a fresh graduate, I am a bit lost on what should I learn as an engineer. If possible, I want to know how you learn when you are a process engineer."

Well, the email stops there and after reading his email, I thought of responding immediately. However, due to certain constraint, I delayed responding to his email. Now, I'm going to share some of my experiences when I started working as a process engineer. Some of them might be OK for you to follow, while some others might not. Judge and justify them yourself.

1. Get to know everybody as soon as possible. When I first be a process engineer, I make sure I know all engineers, executives, supervisors, technicians, fitters, plant operators and event store clerk as soon as possible. Why? Simply because I'll be dealing with them all the time throughout my daily job. At least you know their name and create a common interest with them. This will ease and create good relationship with them. However, do not be too close with your down line manpower. There's a reason for this which I'll cover some other day (please remind me if I forgot).

2. Get to know the process of your plant. This is very important because you are a process engineer and you need to know the detail of the processes in your plant. First of all, you need to get the PID diagram of your plant. Identify and learn the lines, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, tanks and other important units in the PID diagram. Then, go to the plant and trace the lines and compare it with the PID diagram. If it is difficult for you to trace the lines (pipelines), ask a supervisor or plant operator to help and guide you. This is also the reason why I provide tips #1. The job will be easier if you know the right people to help you. As for me, I was assiged to traced each and every valve in my plants. In order to do that, I need not only to trace the lines but also identify all types of valves in the plant. There are basically hundreds of valves installed in the plant. It was tough but after the exercise, I was able to trace the lines, process and know all type of valves.

3. Learn everything as fast as possible. This is very important and is too much to elaborate. You need to be able to pick up everything you learn from your manager, other engineers and executives. Don't be shy to ask from your supervisors, plant operators, technicians and fitters. They have the skill and knowledge that you don't have when you first enter the plant. Learn from all of them. Integrate what they know with what you've learn during your degree. Create and maintain a log book to record everything that is important. Avoid remembering because you might forget. Another way of learning is by asking to the suppliers or vendors. They are the expert of the product or service that they are selling. Hence, don't be shy to asked from them. They'll provide technical information that is important for you. I've done this a lot of time and I appreciate their explanation and teachings. Some times, suppliers / vendors will offer in house training for you and your colleagues. At the end of the day, if you are able to perform your duty as a process engineer smoothly, effectively and efficiently, you'll get good reward from your boss...

Being a process engineer, you need to be able to prepare and produce reports to be presented to your superiors. Understanding the report and preparing them is crucial. Normally, you have various types of reports to prepare such as daily report, monthly report, costing report, meeting minutes reports and others. So, make sure you prepare good report.

4. Understand the politics in your workplace. This is very important. You need to know how things are going on in your plant/factory. This is very subjective and not thought in any chemical engineering text book. You need to get the information and knowledge from various people in your organization. That's why point #1 (above) is vital. Some companies have a culture which will blame somebody else for any errors occuring and this is not healthy. Some other cultures are professional and will accept responsibility of any problem.

5. Communicate properly. This is very important as a process engineer because you'll receive instruction and also provide instruction to your supervisors and plant operators. You need to possess good communication skills to ensure all mesagges and directions are conveyed correctly. Delegate your jobs to your downline with clear cut informations. What we practice in our plant is to have an instruction recording book. Every shifts should refer and sign the book to ackhowledge that they read the instruction. This is different from the quality and recording books. If they have problem comprehending the instruction, they should call us for further clarification. Failure to receive and provide correct instruction will lead to massive errors which will make your life misserable in later stage. So, please, ensure you communicate properly.

Conclusion

Those are just 5 tips for me to share for the time being. I never asked anybody for the tips. I figured them myself and I compile it (in this post) for the benefit of new process engineers. I'm glad that I managed to know everybody and learn lots of thing quickly. Being a successful engineer is critical for your career development. In later stage, you'll get promoted as a senior engineer before becoming a manager. If you are lucky, somebody (head/job hunter) will search you because they know you are an engineer with such a great caliber and offer you better remuneration.

Some of you might want to share your experiences as a new process engineers. If you have something, please share it with us in the comment area or by shooting me an email.

Mentor Me - A Request from Nigerian Engineer

This post is an actual conversation between myself and one of my readers from Nigeria in the last 24 hours (Sunday Kanshio emailed first emailed me on the 30th of April 2009). He wanted to seek some advise from me regarding his career in chemical engineering. Honestly, I don't consider myself a very experienced engineer. It just happen to be that I share some information on my experiences, thoughts and knowledge in this blog. I've had his permission to post our conversation which I think maybe useful for junior engineers or final year students reference.
.........................................................................................................................................................

Dear Sir,
I am a fresh chemical engineering graduate from Nigeria. I am thinking of going for a masters degree in Gas Engineering or Chemical Engineering. I need your advise.
God Bless you.
Thanks
.........................................................................................................................................................

Hi,

Thanks for writing in. It's good if you want to further your studies. But before that i need to ask you a question. What is your ambition or career target? If you want to practice your engineering knowledge, its better if you get a good job with a good company. If you want to be in the academic line, or research, it's good for you to further studies in your masters or pH.D. I fear if you want to be an engineer but further your masters, you'll lost about 2 years of your seniority. However, if you have a master and/or pH.D and would like to be engineer, company likes shell (and others) are now likely to employ engineers with masters and pH.D So, it all depends on your planning and available opportunity and also the global situation.
.........................................................................................................................................................

Dear Sir,

I am very grateful for your timely reply.
I want to be an engineer. My career objective is to secure a job with a multinational oil company. However, getting such job in Nigeria is very competitive. So, waiting till such an opportunity will come may amount to time wastage. Also, I am feeling that having MSc will enhance my chances of actualizing my career objective. I am also looking at gas as a good future.
Please, I attached my CVs for necessary advise. I respect every bit of your mentorship sir.
Thanks sir.
High Regards
.........................................................................................................................................................

Hi,

If that's the case, then you can continue your post graduate, maybe in masters as quickly possible. I hope you can later get a job in an oil company that recognize your qualification. Sometimes it is difficult to get such position because some of them see you as over qualified. But, sometimes, some company recognize your degree/qualification and award you with good job and good salary. It's totally up to you. It's better for you to do your masters which can lead you to become very good in something. That means you are a specialist to be.
.........................................................................................................................................................

Dear Sir,

Thanks for your concern. How about my CV? I will appreciate if you can have a look at it for advice. Sir, in your own opinion, which one among Chemical Engineering and Gas Engineering will you advice inline with my career objective looking at future of the oil and gas industry as a whole. I am trying to anchor myself to a more selling niche in the oil and gas industry. I want to specialize in something that will make me more unique.
High Regards
Kanshio Sunday
.........................................................................................................................................................

Generally your cv is good and you have good experiences as well. Both chemical and gas engineering are good. I can't say much because it's you who should decide in which niche you want to establish yourself. Both disciplines allow you to be in the oil and gas industry. Perhaps after joining the industry for a year or two, you can learn and discover which specialization your would like to pursue with. You can also ask other more experience engineers as well.
.........................................................................................................................................................

Dear sir,
Thank you very much.
I am very much impressed with your pieces of advice.
I wish you good luck in your Ph.D program.
High Regards
.........................................................................................................................................................

You're welcome. Please keep in touch and let me know your progress. It's good to have friends around the globe that have similar interest and spirit.

Another thing I forgot to ask you.
I think the emails between us since yesterday is very interesting and I'm thinking of posting our conversation in my blog to be shared with others who might have almost similar situation like you. I think it might help others. Do you mind I post it into my blog?

Thanks.
.........................................................................................................................................................

Oh! that's very interesting. Sir, you can go ahead a mention my name. It is very big challenge particularly in Nigeria because some graduate do stay without job for several years because of lack of mentoring. I thing is a great thing to be mentored by senior people like you. I am happy about your blog. It's great, your discussion are rich in content.

End of emails.
.........................................................................................................................................................

That's it. A little discussion on Sunday's career with me. I'm not a career counselor but I'll try and give some comments and ideas if one need. I would like to help because I was once in his position before. I have no idea about my career and what is best for me. After dwelling in the chemical engineering world for about 10 years, I have at least some back ground ideas on some interesting routes to be successful in chemical engineering.

If you want to contact Mr. Sunday Kanshio, here is his email: sunday_kanshio@yahoo.com

Recession Proof Industry

I read about this cartoon from the email that I subscribed from Engineering News Daily. The cartoon was taken adopted from engineeringnews.co.za/page/cartoon.

Basically it stated that, if there was such a thing as a sectoral recession, then South Africa’s manufacturing industry is deep in one. Output declined by 15% year-on-year in February, following on the 12,9% year-on-year fall in January. The sector has been contracting since October, and the aftershocks are being felt across the economy. This creates a strong likelihood that South Africa will now officially enter a recession for the first time in over a decade.

What's the global impact towards our industry in Malaysia or globally? The electrical and electronic industries are certainly struggling and I see many people around me were forced to leave their jobs. However, there are no worries in the food-manufacturing industries. All I asked them this time is how great is your bonus?

Got my point? Food - manufacturing industry is recession proof!!!

My Career Updates

It was quite a hectic week for me. I was busy doing some research on my future pH.D work and also for some research grant application. At the same time, I need to prepare for lectures, tests etc. There are also a few undergraduate research projects that needed some attention from me. It is quite an interesting and challenging career for me. Well, the challenge is absolutely not similar compared to the life I had while I was an engineer before.

If anybody asked me, what is the significant differences between being an engineer and a lecturer...? My short answer (without thinking) would be: Now, Nobody is scolding me.... He he.... :) . However, that is not the real answer. That's just a joke.... and my ex-colleague at my previous work place will laugh when I answered that...

The truth is, being a lecturer is really tough. Is it as tough as an engineer? It depends.... If you want to be a lecturer who only lectures, then it's not a big deal. However, if you are the type of person who want to be a very successful lecturer and really build your career, you need to do more then that... you need to work really hard. I don't feel like discussing about this now... perhaps later... (maybe when there's a request...)

Here are some updates about me and my career:

- Thinking, researching, preparing for my pH.D research. In progress.
- Thinking, researching, preparing for some fundamental research grants. In progress.
- Preparing for lectures. Continuous work.
- Collaborating with selected industries (oil and fats) to do research. In progress.
- Maintaining this blog and several others - to share stuffs... Continuous work.
- Technical paper, journal publication. In progress.
- Writing and publishing books and eBooks. In progress.
- Preparing myself to be an expert in selected areas for present and future consultancy work.
- Industrial visits. In planning stage.
- Creating a new forum for discussing chemical engineering issues. In progress...
- Maintaining "Chemical Engineering Rocks" group in Facebook. Come and join...
- Working on my professional engineer status. In progress.
- Collaborating with a multinational company to promote biofuel (especially from Jatropha). I'll be blogging about this in the near future. It's very exciting and involve donation/charity.
- Going to attend a number of training and courses in October and November.
-Just conducted a 5S audit and the faculty... to be continued tomorrow.
- .... I can't think of others....

Well are some updates from me...I hope I can handle and manage them wisely. I also hope that my spirit and energy will continue bursting...Adios...

I Resigned From My Engineering Job

I wanted to blog about it a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I was too tight up with various tasks and issues that need to be settled first. I have resigned from my job as a process engineer. My last day working as an engineer was 30th June 2008. The next day I was officially working as an educator (I like to use educator more than lecturer because it sound better). I would like to take this opportunity to share my experiences on the few last days as a process engineer and my first few days as an educator.

Previous job chapter….

After being accepted as an educator I tendered in my resignation letter to my superior. It was a really mixed feeling that time. Is this really true? I really wanted to be a lecturer and I've been trying hard for 5 years. I could not believe it when I received the offer letter in my house mailbox. I thank God for providing me a chance to fulfill my wish...

What happen to my previous work place… Oh…my plant operators gave me a Parker Pen. I haven’t use it yet because surprisingly there is no ink in the pen!!! Maybe they just bought the pen, wrapped it up and gave it to me. BUT the most important thing is the thought. I missed them and I believed they missed me too… :)

On my last day, my boss arranged for a surprise lunch. I did not expected that. We enjoyed the lunch but I did not ate very much because I was sitting exactly in front of my boss!!! So, although my desire ask me to eat some more, but my right brain asked me to stop consuming more food. Uhhh…. what a waste…..

After lunch, with some assistance from my wife, she helped me ordered 8 pieces of 12? pizza online. It was a lot cheaper ordering online compared to calling them. You should check it out if you still don’t know about it. On top of those pizzas, I ordered “pisang goreng (fried banana) and cendawan goreng (fried mushroom)” delivery. All those pizzas, fried banana and fried mushroom were courtesy from me… a person who is going to leave the company… I treated my friends, operators, fitters, technicians, store people and others who have been very cooperative to me during my stay at the company.

At 5.30 pm on that Monday (my last day at job), I shook my hand with my office colleagues. But when I shook my hand with one of my senior colleague which has been close to me and mentored me a lot… I felt very very extremely sad. Suddenly I felt so sad that I could not help it. Without realizing, tears dropped while I was driving home leaving the company I served for 3 years and 22 days. It wasn’t a long time but honestly I felt like working at that company for 5-6 years. I’m finally free from that type of “factory pressure”…

Before this, I have to be 100% alert all the time on everything that is happening at my plant. I have to know and ensure smooth operation of the plant 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. When ever there is a problem in my plant, I need to ensure that it is settled as soon as possible. I must answer my superior and sometimes to the head quarters for any problem or downtime occurring in the plant.

Please don't be mistaken. I'm not saying that I don't like my job as a process engineer. I liked it a lot very much, indeed. I've learned various aspects of technical knowledge, project management, management skills, manpower management, social, political issues throughout my position and my stay there and I've been sharing some of them in this blog. However, I think I can contribute more when I'm in the academic line. I can educate the young going to be engineers, I can do research work, I can become a consultant, I can do publications, attend conferences and the list simply goes on. I'm more flexible and I know it is going to be a better career for me.

Being an engineer for almost 6 years have given me the real exposure on how to be a good profound engineer which is indispensable for the company. Hopefully, I can educate the students better based on my experiences in the oil and gas field and also the refinery life.

My New Job

I have been in my new job for almost a fortnight. It was quite a solid pact 13 days as I was assigned a lot of tasks. So far the job is not really relaxing but it is still better than my previous job as a process engineer which has more intense pressure. I realized that my new job as a lecturer/educator requires me to be more discipline compared to my previous job. We have the time flexibility and we must know how to manage it wisely. We cannot misused the flexibility given to us. I have my own room @ office, and It is mean for people like me to work more effectively and efficiently. I have my own large working station, sofa, huge rack etc. I just requested for a 2 drawer metal rack to lock my important stuffs, just in case. My wife’s office is just 20 steps away from mine… ;) . Oh yea…we have the magnificent wifi facilities and that means I’m connected to the net all the time…

However, besides all that, the real challenge for me are preparing for the class and also deciding on the research I'm going to do for my pH.D. I need to do some extensive survey on what research I should conduct for my pH.D this coming semester. This is going to be my future because my career will be based on what research niche area I’m indulged in. I need to be an expert in certain area so that I can easily develop that area without competing with anyone locally. So far, I have brainstormed, searched and listed a dozen of research title. Most of them are directly related to renewable energy and reaction / catalysis engineering.

If you have any idea what field I should research in, please feel free to tell me. It should be something meddling with chemical engineering > reaction engineering. Some example of the research is hydrogen production from H2S splitting or from syngas production, biofuel production using catalyst via catalytic plasma reaction, and biodiesel production using heterogeneous catalyst instead of using NaOH which is a homogeneous catalyst.

Special note:

Although I'm no longer working as a practicing engineer in a plant, I'm still an engineer serving in the academic and research arena. I also associate myself with the industry and other engineering institution society. It is my goal and objective to share my knowledges and experiences to engineering students, young engineers and other practicing engineers so that they can benefit positively from this blog.

This is a newspaper cutting from a local paper "Utusan Malaysia" 5th July 2001. This was when I'm doing my Masters in chemical engineering - "Single step conversion of methane to gasoline using zeolite catalysts".

Interupted Planning

Sometimes or rather often, it is difficult to plan our work. What I mean is the work depends on various situations and decision makings. We planned our annual leaves and vacations but suddenly something important came in and we have to cancel the entire plan. Have you been facing that?

Canceling your plans after planning them for weeks or months must be really frustrating. But, we have to accept the fact. We are working for somebody. We are an employer. We are an engineer. We have a responsibility and we must deliver what we are supposed to do. "no understanding".

So, what can be very important that suddenly hinder you from being a temporary away from your routine work. There are a lot. It depends on what field you're in. It can be a problem faced by your customer and you got to fly urgently to their place and solve what ever problem they faced. I've experienced such thing before. A problem appeared while my colleague was handling a small routine project at Kerteh. There was some trouble blending our chemicals and it affected our customers production. My boss rang me and asked me to drive to Kerteh that night to clear the mess. As a committed employee, what can I say..... 30 minutes after the telephone conversation, I began my journey from Johor Bahru to Kerteh, leaving my family behind over the weekend. That was from my previous job as a chemical/project engineer.

As for my present job, I really look forward to enjoy a short one day break during the coming Labour Day. However, to my surprize I'm not going to be able to enjoy it. We have a problem. The main problem is simply lack of raw material. At the same time, the annual machinery inspection is due. Hence, both reasons combines and resulted to a week long annual shutdown beginning this Sunday. There goes my weekend and my public holiday (This is what I call "area beyond control"). All the planning and decision was made in a space of 5 hours. And within those 5 hours, I've to rush to arrange and plan everything.

Tentative shutdown planning, schedule, manpower arrangement, contractors, JKKP (my colleague is handling this) and others need to be settled before today's working hours ended. Why? Because tomorrow is going to be a weekend and the annual plant shutdown is going to take place commencing this Sunday. Friday afternoon is the only time to settle all the planning and coordination. Luckily, I've pre-planned the shutdown and I can swiftly prepare all the necessary stuffs for the shut down.

Well, that is some slice of my feeling, emotion and story that I can share. I'm not saying that I'm not happy working as an engineer. I like the job and I'm very proud to be an engineer. However, this is what we call responsibility. As an engineer, we have to perform whenever and wherever we are required to. At some point, there are a lot of sacrifices that need to be done. It's just a matter how well we can adapt and cope with our job. Are you tough enough to be an engineer? Only you can answer it...

My Chemical Eengineering Career Overview

After graduating almost 9 years ago, I have been working in the research and development area, oil and gas industry, and oil and fats sector. That's all together 3 different fields. To be honest, I'm glad I went through all those fields. It made me taste a little bit something from those areas.

I never plan it to be like that. I believed the God has arrange all of these for me. The God wants me to be more diversified, more all rounder and know more technical details from various industries. Now that I'm going to turn 32, I think it's already time for me to decide on which area to dwell. I need to establish myself in an area where I can grow together with it and become the expert in it.

My wife is a chemical engineer as well and after completing her degree, she straight away joint a local university as an academic staff. Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. That's good. She continued her Masters degree in Chemical Engineering after a year becoming a tutor. After getting her masters, she became a lecturer, teaching Unit Operation and Mass Transport subject. After a while she was on study leave because she is now doing her pH.D.

As you probably already know, my journey differs from her. If you have been following this blog from the beginning, I have shared my R & D experiences, my oil and gas journey - going on shore and offshore - traveling in and outside the country, my oil and fats adventure - taking care of a 3000 MT/D capacity physical refining plant etc.

Well, there are pro and cons on my part and that is exactly what I want to share. Check on the following points:

Pro

1. I tasted and experienced a lot. That means I know generally more about those industries.

2. I have been working in several offshore platforms which I believe not a lot of engineers have done that. Traveling offshore is very exciting and I always look forward for it. The allowances are great and if you are the kind of person who want real physical challenge and want to make big bucks, by all means, try and apply a job for an oil or service company.

3. I experienced working as a service person and I also work as a end product person. Those are totally different. You might want to know about this before you work. In the 2nd point above, I mentioned about applying a job from an oil or service company. That will reflect your working lifestyle.

If you work in a service company, you'll be more flexible and probably do a lot of traveling. You are doing services to your customers. Hence, there'll be a lot of traveling here and there. I made a really crazy trip few years back from Johor Bahru to Jakarta to Johor Bahru in one single day. I was in Johor Bahru in the morning, went to Jakarta, met up with my principle and at 7 pm I was already back in JB having some BicMac with my wife. It was a really tiring journey.

If you work in an oil company or end product company, you'll be normally stationed just there. You have to take care of a plant, or project or maintenance etc. That place is going to be your world. You'll be there from morning until your working time ended. Most of the time, you have to work additional hours because there are simply tonnes of jobs.

Cons

1. I could not focus to one area because I switched courses 3 times in a space of 9 years. However within that small space of time, I tried and worked hard to become a good employee each and every time.

2. Jumping here and there delayed myself to climb the corporate leader. Some of my friends have become senior engineer or manager. However, I'm still a normal process engineer. That's fine. It's OK. I'm still having a good job and decent pay.

I'll ad up the list when I can think of some more...

What I wish...

If I have the opportunity to choose which industrial career based on my present knowledge and information, I think would like to work in either 2 areas:

i. A Chemical Engineer in a service company in the Oil and Gas industry. Example of companies - Halliburton, Schlumberger, MECAS, Clear Water, Weatherford etc.

ii. A Technical Engineer for a service/product company selling heat exchanger. To be exact, I would like to work for Alfa Laval.

However, I would also like to be in the academic line and involve in research and development. But, I'm not sure yet about that. Let's just see how my career is going to be...

What about you? Are you working your dream job?

Graduate Engineer Should Be A Profesional Engineer

All graduate chemical engineers must have the desire and vision to become a professional engineer (PE). But, what is a professional engineer?

Professional Engineer is the term for registered or licensed engineers in some countries who are permitted to offer their professional services directly to the public. The term Professional Engineer and the actual practice of professional engineering is legally defined and protected by a government body. In some jurisdictions only registered or licensed Professional Engineers are permitted to use the title, or to practice Professional Engineering.

For more definitions, reference and more understanding on professional engineers, please check out the following websites (which is from other countries too):

Advantages of Becoming a Professional Engineer

A professional engineer is the mark of a professional. The status demands an extra measure of competence and dedication. While not all engineers find professional engineer status mandatory for their chosen career paths, the PE initials before (or after their names) can provide many advantages.

Employers in all disciplines indicate that they find engineers with PE status to be more dedicated with enhanced leadership and management skills. PE also achieve an enhanced status in the eyes of the public, which equates the engineer with professionals licensed in other fields. PE status is an indicator of dedication to integrity, hard work, creativity and assurance that the individual engineer has passed at least a minimum screen of competence.

Professional Engineer in Malaysia

A graduate engineer in Malaysia can apply and be a professional engineer. From my general observations, there are very few graduate engineers registering with Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM), a Malaysian government body and Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), a professional body for engineers promoting professionalism and encourage continuous learning.

JoeWong has detailed out the route to become a professional engineer in Malaysia. On top of that, the issue is also been discussed in Chemical Engineering Forum. If you have doubt or more queries regarding the issue on becoming a professional engineer in Malaysia, you can ask and discuss it in the forum.

Professional Engineers For Other Countries

There are various professional organization that promotes the professional engineer status in other countries. Some examples are:

Me and My White Safety Helmet

When i was a student, I wonder how would it feel to become a chemical engineer? How does it feel to wear the safety helmet, that will made us look like a real cool macho engineer.

In the lab at the university, we just put on the white lab coat and not the safety helmet. After my first degree, I continued with my masters degree and still, I have not yet put on the safety helmet. I wonder when will I own and wear the safety helmet.

After completing my masters degree, I joined a local oil and gas servicing company and directly traveled to the site on my first day at work. I was supplied not only with the safety helmet that I wanted to put on all this while, but also jacket, safety boot, coverall, cotton glove, leather glove, goggle and 3M half face mask. On top of that, I have to manage a group of people who were about 5-10 years older than me to blend some specialty chemicals. Under the hot shiny sun, I have to wear the safety helmet. That time, I wished I don't have to wear the safety helmet with the goggle attach on top of it (The goggle need to be applied while blending or pouring the chemicals). I don't feel like the safety helmet is protecting me from anything. After all, there's nothing going to fall onto my head at the side. It was really heavy and I felt like my center of gravity is at my head!!!

Despite of that, I felt sort of proud to display my safety helmet on the rear dashboard of my car and let everybody see it. At home my son will take my helmet and act as an engineer, just like his father. I don't know whether he wants to be an engineer too. It's totally up to him.

Few years after servicing the oil and gas industry, I get a new job as a process engineer in a refinery plant (in the oils and fats industry), I still put on the safety helmet. Now, it is different. I don' have to put any accessories on the safety helmet. It is lighter. I have to wear the safety helmet which is white in colour as soon as I enter the factory. White safety helmet differentiate executives from supervisors, technicians, operators, and others which put on a yellow safety helmet. In different places, safety helmet colour coding is applied. Some may have blue colour representing a safety committee or safety officer etc.

Wearing safety helmet in the plant is very important. The plant is really big and there are a lots of equipments. I lost track of the number of occasions where I knock my head on something. Sometimes, my head hit a metal bar, a globe valve, a lowered roof and others which I could not recall. Luckily I have my safety helmet to protect my head and brain! I could not imagine the state of injury I'm going to face if not protected by the safety helmet.

Previously, I wrongly used the safety helmet. How did I misused it? I sat on it!!! That is totally a wrong usage of the safety helmet. As a result, my safety helmet have a lot of ugly scratches. The white safety helmet on the picture above belongs to me. If you have super focus eyes, you can zoom in and notice some scratches and uneven surface on the helmet edge. Don't be like me. Appreciate your safety helmet. Don't sit on your safety helmet. Respect it. It will protect you, your head and brain!

300 , Design Project 2, 5S, NPSH, Pump - Rambling!!!

I did not realize that the previous post about "Dipping Tape and Measuring Oil Tonnage" was my post number 300. That makes this current post that you're reading - number 301 in this Chemical Engineering World blog. Wow, it has been about 1 year and 3 months since I began blogging about my working experiences. I never expected , thought or dreamed this blog can be like what it is today. I never imagined to have more than 250 subscribers (at this moment and growing) for a technical chemical engineering blog. Thanks for your support.

This coming days will be a very hectic one for me. Tonnes of jobs and projects are waiting for me at work. We are going to have some minor 9 hours plant maintenance job. That job must be carefully coordinated in order to reach its objective - which is to improve the vacuum system in our plant process. I also have my plant monthly reports to complete and that is not easy as it need us to really focus and concentrate.

At the same time, the final year design project 2 file number 2 just arrived last Friday from a local university for me to read, digest, check, evaluate and give marks. I'm not sure when I can finish reading the design project report, but I was ordered to complete and email the marks by the end of this week... Well, I got to rush for that as well.

Oh yes... I almost forgot that I also need to conduct a 5S training for my plant operators. Maybe I'll arrange that on Tuesday afternoon.

Yesterday, on Saturday, I attended a very brilliant 3 hours training regarding pump. The training was conducted by one of our very experience and knowledgeable superior. From the training I discovered various types of pumps with various applications. We also did some real practice on how to calculate the Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH), based on our plant condition and situation. This was more advance from the basic NPSH that we learned in university. Furthermore, at university, we only know the theory, but this time, we experience and appreciate the NPSH knowledge... of course after we faced all the pump problems in the plant. We did learned other stuffs on why the pump trips, cavitate, air lock etc and it's relationship with the pump curve.

Lately, I also received few emails asking me some favours on various issues and also asked for some advice/assistance. I'm trying my best to entertain those request, but occasionally, lately, I'm too busy. I hope you can understand my situation. I'll try my very best to get back to some of you. I'm also struggling and fighting with time to keep this blog updated with fresh feed and content for you to read. That's why I really appreciate anybody who is willing to provide one or two post (or more... which is good) so that we can have this blog updated more frequently. If you have anything to share, it can be from your own experience or some new stuff that you learn or know, you're welcome to email it to me. If it suite this blog, why should I not post it in this blog for you?!!

I also have some post which I did mentioned to elaborate more. I'll continue them soon. Just bare with me for a while. Some of you have personally asked the continuation of those post. Sorry for the delay mate...

From the Chemical Engineer's wife

My husband has been begging me for quite some time already to write a post here in his blog. It’s not that I don’t want to, but I personally think you guys out there prefers to here from him than from me. Out of his mountainous work load, he seems like the busiest men on earth. Despite of him trying his hardest to update, sometimes he can’t catch up. So here I am, writing my two cents worth…..

I am now in my fourth semester of my Chemical Engineering Phd in a local university (Malaysia). It is not the most joyous experience for me. Since I was little, I hate studying. I have to do this one just because my faculty wouldn’t let anybody off without a PhD. What a bugger. However, it is not as heavy as doing my first degree back in England as I don’t have to attend classes or any exams..what a relief. The hardest part is getting myself organized and focused.

My supervisors are both very helpful and they do not force me to do anything. They just let me be independent. I don’t have to see them every week and they don’t even bother if I don’t see them for months…hahaha. There are goods and bads in that. The good part is that you don’t have to work like a horse in meeting their target and you don’t feel pressured. However, the danger is that you will be progressing very slowly. You will not be writing papers (journal, conferences), your experiments went on in a slow pace and you will be jeopardizing you PhD. Therefore, the key is discipline!! No matter what kind of supervisor you have, just discipline yourself and have your own set of targets. If your supervisor is the pushy type of person, just work with him/her and do everything he/she asked for. If your supervisor just let you be, arrange appointments to see them to discuss your targets/progress/plan. They wouldn’t say no, they just want you to work on your own pace. So if you think you are not a highly disciplined person, choose a supervisor that can make you work for it.

The relationship between student and supervisor is often difficult to orchestrate. Some supervisors treat their students as colleagues and friends, others prefer to maintain a formal teacher-pupil relationship. In any case, your PhD supervisor will be an important figure in your life for at least the next three years. Your PhD will inevitably affect the rest of your career, so take some time to consider not just what and where you'd like to research, but who you'd like to work with.

Here are some tips on How to Choose your PhD Supervisor.

1. If you’re doing your PhD in the department where you're doing your first degree or where you are currently lecturing, just ask these questions: Does he know your name? Can you face another three years of his jokes? If you're already calling him 'Uncle Keith' it may be time to move on.

2. If you’re doing your PhD in another institute:

- Approach someone whose work you know from the literature. It's important that there won't be a major clash of interests and personalities.

- Look around the department and assess your potential supervisor's standing. (if you could go)

- Talk to his other students (emails are also ok). Are they relaxed, confident and busy or do they have a glazed expression and a compulsion to look over their shoulders? Have they published single author papers? First author papers? At all?

- Communicate with him through emails. If he always answered your emails between lecture tour of Japan and a conference in Brazil, will you ever see him?

Hopefully this would be useful for those planning to do their PhD. Good Luck…
