Superb State of the Art Laser Technology - One Stop Laser Solution
Monday, October 31, 2011
Maybe this is not really directly related to Chemical Engineering, but if we want to be a rich chemical engineer, I strongly believe, we must have the desire and start our very own business (anything from small manufacturing product up to becoming a consultant or expert in some technical areas). A laser related business may require a high capital but I believe, our technical engineering knowledge can cope well with the laser industry. Despite of this is a laser tech business, we still can apply some of our chemical engineering skill and knowledge such as the environmental, safety and health, technical drawing an calculation etc.
Common, check out the video below. Tell me if this is cool or not... :)
If you are interested to explore further about the technical and business stuffs that Northeast Laser & Electropolish offering, check out their official site at:www.northeastlaser.com.

Renewable Energy Project Videos
Saturday, January 30, 2010
Ever thought of a renewable energy projects? My research is involving a renewable energy reaction, but I'm not revealing it right now until I complete my Ph.D. haha.... But, here are some videos of some student projects that are quite interesting...maybe it can give you some ideas and inspiration...Check it out...
Student Project
Students at the J.B. Speed School of Engineering develop renewable energy projects for a summer course. The course, directed by Dr. Mahendra Sunkara, is the first project for the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research and Environmental Stewardship. Students were asked to develop systems using a variety of different backgrounds, from chemical engineering to physics.
Solar Tower - renewable energy green global warming
EnviroMission Limited (www.enviromission.com.au) produced this 5 minute video on the pilot plant in Spain. It is an older video (2000) but gives a decent understanding of the solar tower concept.
EnviroMission, Ltd. (US Market: EVOMY, Australian Exchange: EVM) is a renewable energy developer of sustainable "green" energy solutions for the energy market. EnviroMission aims to be one of Australia's leading producers of clean renewable energy. EnviroMission holds the proprietary rights to Solar Tower technology, a large-scale renewable energy technology based on simple fundamentals of physics -- hot air rises. Solar Tower technology has the potential to offer competitive renewable energy with equal reliability to fossil fuel generators.
A single 200MW Solar Tower power station will provide enough electricity to power around 400,000 households. The energy output will represent an annual saving of more than 1,960,000 tonnes of greenhouse CO2 gases from entering the environment when compared to brown coal emissions in Victoria. The greenhouse savings equate to the removal of approximately 500,000 cars from the road. The Australian Solar Tower project consists of six distinct phases, the first two of which (project optimization and pre-feasibility commercialization) have already been completed. The third phase (final feasibility), paving the way for the implementation of the next three phases (final design, construction, and commercial operation).

Engineering Ethics 101 Videos
Monday, October 19, 2009
When I did my chemical engineering degree, I was not exposed to the engineering ethics. Now that I know the importance of engineering ethics, plus my quest to be a professional engineer, I'm progressively learning about engineering ethics. Learning from my own mentor (from IEM) is one way. Another way is to learn it from the book. However, I found it easier to learn the basics by watching video. I was searching about engineering ethic videos and found a set of fantastic video by Prof. Michael C. Loui. Though he is from the electrical engineering background, but the engineering ethics content is generally the
same. The video is simple, easy to comprehend and I believe it can provide us good understanding on what is Engineering ethics.
Part 1: Engineering Ethics 101 - Professionalism
We need to really understand that engineering is a profession, and one way that professions distinguish themselves is by having and enforcing a code of ethics. The code of ethics are very important. Without it, engineers would not earn the respect like it earned today. Students and junior engineers need to be exposed with this. Check out the first video on Engineering Ethics 101 - Professionalism.
Part 2: Ethics & the Responsible Engineer
Taking responsibility for one's actions is an important part of being an engineer. In this video, Michael Loui reviews different types of responsibility and gives case examples from notable engineering failures.
Chemical Engineering:Serves chemical engineering professionals in the chemical process industry including manufacturing, engineering, government... |
Part 3: Conflicts of Interest for EngineersMany engineering engagements are frought with conflicts of interest. This (3rd) video explains what they are, how they can be avoided, and how the can be dealt with when they cannot be avoided.
There are more videos, but lets digest the first 3 videos. I'll publish the other videos later.

Next Generation Energy System
Monday, April 27, 2009
Tokyo Gas is proposing next-generation energy systems to meet future energy needs and changing environmental conditions, and has put forth an image of what cities will look like in the year 2030.
Traffic infrastructure will make cities more compact with commercial and residential areas growing closer, and cities will be much more user friendly for senior citizens. There will be advances in the adaptable, shared use of energy on a variety of fronts, as well as advances in energy efficiency.
Traffic infrastructure engineering will introduce improvements to cope with natural disasters, and efforts will focus on designing so-called "Energy Security Areas" in the heart of cities that will feature high-level disaster prevention measures.
Cities in 2030 will advance the use of renewable energy sources, and in addition to preexisting energy facilities they will incorporate districts that showcase the intensive use of renewable energy, and carbon dioxide free environment promotion districts.
Not only will large-scale structures and public infrastructure utilize renewable energy sources, the average home will also feature the use of solar cells and solar thermal panels in conjunction with home-use fuel cells.
Interested to learn more about it? Then, what are you waiting for, check out the video below:

Molten Iron Throwing
Do you like fireworks? Are they beautiful? Off course. What if you don't have fireworks but want to enjoy something almost as exciting and as gorgeous as fireworks? If you dare (not afraid to die) and if you are brave enough, you can try throwing away molting iron. If you hire a safety officer, you probably won't be allowed to do this. It involves extreme temperature and is not safe. Imagine the temperature of molted iron.
However, in a dangerous festivals - in Nuanquan, China, locals hurl molten iron at a wall. And sometimes, on themselves. To believe it, watch this following video. Interesting...

Periodic Table of Elements
Tuesday, February 24, 2009
I have heard about them (Periodic Table of Elements video) last end of last year. They have created a very interactive way of learning the periodic table - using youtube.com. They explained all the elements in the periodic table via video and update the elements video content from time to time. If you haven't heard about them or haven't watch sample of the periodic table elements, feel free to watch some of the selected elements below. For your information, I have watched mercury, hydrogen, helium, lithium and seaborgium (seaborgium, Sg is has the simplest video so far possibily because it is a very rare element).
So, what is Periodic table (of elements)? Well, the periodic table of the chemical elements is a tabular method of displaying the chemical elements. Although precursors to this table exist, its invention is generally credited to Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. Mendeleev intended the table to illustrate recurring ("periodic") trends in the properties of the elements. The layout of the table has been refined and extended over time, as new elements have been discovered, and new theoretical models have been developed to explain chemical behavior. (Source: Wikipedia)
Personally, I have not yet seen all the elements but I'm going to watch all the periodic elements video soon. What about you?

New tests on baby milk powder in China show no signs of melamine. The scandal that broke almost a month ago, is responsible for the deaths of four infants and sickening more than 54 thousand others. (Oct. 6). Source: AssociatedPress (AP).
One child has died and an official said the number of children sickened had risen to 432.
Investigators have detained 19 people and are questioning 78 to find out how melamine was added to milk supplied to Sanlu Group Co., China's biggest milk powder producer, officials said at a news conference. They said some tainted powder was exported to Taiwan but none was sent to other foreign markets.
In Taiwan, authorities seized thousands of bags of Chinese milk powder. The incident reflects China's enduring problems with product safety despite a shake-up of its regulatory system after a spate of warnings and recalls about tainted toothpaste, faulty tires and other goods.
The biggest group of victims is in China itself, where shoddy or counterfeit products are common. Infants, hospital patients and others have been killed or injured by tainted or fake milk, medicines, liquor and other products.
In 2004, more than 200 infants suffered malnutrition and at least 12 died after being fed phony formula with no nutrients. Some 40 companies were found to be making phony formula.

How Crude Oil Refined?
Friday, August 29, 2008
Do you know how crude oil is processed ore refined? If no, then I recommend you to check out this video. Even if you know, it's good to see it to learn other plants. It shows us how crude oil is refined. The video shows an American Refining Group, Bradford, Pa., which is the world's oldest and continuously operating refiner of Pennsylvania crude oil. Take a tour of the "Barrell House". It's like a 9 minutes technical plant visit. You don't see the oil but at least you learn something about the basic process. Perhaps, later we can have more of this type video technical plant visit to enrich our technical skills :) .

Fabrication of Pressure Vessels
Tuesday, April 08, 2008
These are two very interesting videos that I would like to share. It's about pressure vessels that are normally available in any production plant from various industries. For me, I have numerous pressure vessels installed in the plant I take care. I never really pay attention on those vessels which include oil heater, boiler, distillation column, shell and tube etc. I only care about those vessels during the annual plant inspection shutdown and maintenance. That time, we have to open the manhole(s) of the vessels and clean the internal part of it. However, I have never thought or imagine how those pressure vessel are fabricated! The following videos reveals hot those equipments are made. Check out the videos - Part 1 and part 2.
The following texts are the description of the videos above that came along with the video in youtube.com:
A pressure vessel is a closed, rigid container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure different from the ambient pressure. The end caps fitted to the cylindrical body are called heads.
In addition to industrial compressed air receivers and domestic hot water storage tanks, other examples of pressure vessels are: diving cylinder, recompression chamber, distillation towers, autoclaves and many other vessels in mining or oil refineries and petrochemical plants, nuclear reactor vessel, habitat of a space ship, habitat of a submarine, pneumatic reservoir, hydraulic reservoir under pressure, rail vehicle airbrake reservoir, road vehicle airbrake reservoir and storage vessels for liquified gases such as ammonia, chlorine, propane, butane and LPG.
In the industrial sector, pressure vessels are designed to operate safely at a specific pressure and temperature, technically referred to as the "Design Pressure" and "Design Temperature". A vessel that is inadequately designed to handle a high pressure constitutes a very significant safety hazard. Because of that, the design and certification of pressure vessels is governed by design codes such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in North America, the Pressure Equipment Directive of the EU (PED), Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), CSA B51 in Canada, AS1210 in Australia and other international standards like Lloyd's, Germanischer Lloyd, Det Norske Veritas, Stoomwezen etc.
