Write to Market Your Expertise

As a chemical engineer, you might be very busy with your jobs such as monitoring production, inventory checking, design and costing, preparing reports, coordination meetings, ensuring project deadlines and many more. At the same time, you may want to balance it with contributing your knowledge and experiences to the chemical engineering society, but unfortunately you can’t find the time to do that.

For your information, I’m the type of person who loves to write and share. I have been doing that since I was in primary school. That trait has been continuously carried on until I became an engineer where I no longer have a platform to write and share. However, everything changes in 2006 where I found a new platform for me to write and share. That year I started this blog and it has been actively updated until today. I’m very happy with the responses and feedback that I received from the readers of Chemical Engineering World blog.

What I would like to highlight here is the fact that as an engineer, there’s an importance for us to share information, updates and experiences. There are several places where we can share our thoughts and knowledge, for instance, we can share it in a blog, forum, engineering magazine, newsletter, book, book chapter, report, article and so on. There are also professional engineering societies such as Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), American Institution of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Chemical Engineering Division and others that you can share with. This is very important as this can expose you to the world. You have certain capability that other engineers might not possess and that shows how unique you are. You need to market yourself and your expertise. When you successfully market yourself, people will know who you are and there will be somebody who may need your help and professional service.

I’m lucky because I’m blessed with a little spare time to write my thoughts and experiences, especially in blog. I don’t consider myself an expert in any chemical engineering discipline, but the funny thing is many people acknowledge my existence and these people come from all over the world. This was done unintentionally. I never planned for this. My thought in the first place when I started this blog was too only share experiences and knowledge. That’s all. But, my sharing has rewarded me with pure satisfaction. I’ve made more friends, more contacts and more credibility. That’s the truth. That’s what I’ve been telling a friend of mine who is an expert in waste management. “You got to share and market yourself”. “Write good articles, reports and essays about your expertise in waste management”. People will know and identify you as the expert in that field and may demand for your service.

But then, the popular limitation or excuse such as no time takes place. That’s when I think we need to act intelligently to overcome the weaknesses. If you can’t afford to spare some time to write, you need to leverage or ask other people to do it for you. This is why and the main reason people become successful. They can’t do everything by themselves. They are not superman. Hence, they ask for some help. They seek for other people’s services or help them do part of their work. Maybe they have their own downline manpower, junior engineer, senior clerk and so on.

Female Chemical Engineer - No offence please...

When I was working as a process engineer few years back, I came across an interesting and funny experience. A newly graduate chemical engineer just joined the company and I was instructed by my manager to bring her around the plants and facilities. She was so excited and I walked her through the plants, showed her the heat exchanger, vessels, distillation columns and almost everything. I also brought her to the control room and explained to her the process. Being young and energetic as well as equipped with the process PID diagram, she asked me thousands of questions.

After that, I showed her the cooling tower and she was also very excited to see a series of huge cooling towers. I asked her, "Do you want to climb the cooling tower?"

She answered, "Yes, I want to".

Then I asked her to climb first and I followed closely behind. She was so fired up to see the big fans and also the hot water flowing down the cooling tower...

But, after that...this happen...

She cried...and cried...she cannot go down the cooling tower... She can't afford to see the ground. She don't want to go down from the cooling tower. She's shivering. She's crying. She's holding my hand, not wanting me to leave her.

Natural Memory Foam Versus Synthetic Memory Foam

As a normal human being, we need to sleep few hours a day. That includes me and I never care where or on what I sleep on. The most important thing is I can sleep peacefully for few hours and revive my energy before facing a new fresh day for new life and work.

However, I learn something important two days ago which imperatively associates with our health and sleeping activity. I came across a new terminology which is called memory foam. I have not heard about it before, so as a chemical engineer, it really caught my interest to learn and research more about it. Do you know what memory foam is? Basically, memory foam is polyurethane with additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. It is also often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam.

I believe a lot of the mattresses that we use nowadays are made of memory foams. To be specific, they are made of synthetic memory foams. Do we care? Honestly I did not bother about it. Do we know the risk and danger of it? Since, I did not care, I was not aware of any treat it has. However, I was very surprised after learning the potential risk from synthetic memory foams or shall I call it mattress chemical?!

It is a fact that toxins can now be found in nearly all common household products; from carpets to microwaves, paints, couches, mattresses and baby cribs to children's clothing. Many of these toxins accumulate in the body and are never expelled. Unfortunately, normal synthetic memory foam, yes the one we use to sleep on, also contains some level of toxic and may contribute to the level of toxic in our body.

When you sleep, your body regenerates and recharges itself. At this time, prolonged exposure to poisonous volatile organic compounds and toxic chemicals when your body is in this vulnerable state should not be taken lightly. Now, you really need to pay special attention on this matter.

Reports of health problems linked to chemicals in new mattresses.

Unlike mattresses of 40+ years ago, mattresses today are manufactured with increased amounts of petroleum based compounds in the form of foams, plastics, and a variety of volatile chemicals (including controversial flame retardants). Research and personal accounts suggest people can become ill by the repeated and continuous exposure to these low level chemicals during the sleep process. This is especially true for people who have lower levels of liver detoxification enzymes known as cytochrome P-450 (thereby allowing chemicals to build up in their blood to higher than normal levels). Since research now shows these chemicals are in fact evaporating from the materials used to make modern day beds and that some are carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds, the next important step is to publicize any personal accounts of illnesses people develop immediately following a new bed/mattress purchase. Health effects caused by petroleum chemical exposure can weaken or damage the immune and nervous system. Interestingly, autoimmune disorders have also been linked with exposure to petroleum-based chemicals and have been found to be the underlying etiology of many common health problems today (soft tissue damage, arthritis, etc).

So, how bad, how much chemicals and what chemicals are there inside synthetic memory foam? I can’t answer how much chemicals are there inside synthetic memory foams, but typical synthetic memory foam contains the following chemicals:

• 1,1,1, 2-Tetrachloroethane
• Acetone
• Dimethylformamide
• Methyl benzene (toluene)
• Methylene dianiline
• toluene–neoprene
• Vinilideine chloride

Those chemicals are readily exposed to us and we cannot afford them to penetrate our body in anyway. If synthetic memory foam is that bad, what should you do?

Simply switch to natural memory foam. Natural memory foam contains zero toxic chemicals. It only contains natural ingredients such as:

• Cone essence
• Emulsion of Hevea brasiliensis milk in water
• Fats
• Hevea brasiliensis milk
• Hydrolyzed corn
• water

Can we still enjoy petroleum as we used to?

Ten years ago I began my Chemical Engineering masters degree. The title of my master thesis was “Optmization of oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) to C2+ products”. That time, I was so interested with the topic energy. That’s why I opted that research field because I want to help and contribute to seek for ways to obtain petroleum energy from other sources since the petroleum reserve is diminishing!!! OCM is actually part of the technology to convert natural gas to C2 products (ethane, ethylene, acetylene) and further on oligomerize to gasoline with the help of zeolite ZSM-5 catalyst. That time, in my literature review, it was stated that the petroleum research is going to end in 15 years time. I noted that a decade ago which means 10 years ago. If that information is correct, we shall be enjoying petroleum until 2015!!!

Is that right?

After I completed my masters degree, I work with an oil and gas servicing company. I’m not the only engineer there. Two petroleum engineers were employed after me. It is interesting to have intellectual friends like them to discuss about the energy dilemma of petroleum.

One of them ask, “Do you think petroleum will last around 2015?”

“I’m not sure…”, I answered briefly and slowly. “Hopefully not”, I added a two seconds after that.

Being a petroleum engineering student, my colleague began his story…

“Petroleum is abundantly available down there inside the earth. The supply can last up to 100 years. The problem now is our current technology is not capable to retrieve the black gold. Hence, we need to keep on researching and developing new techniques and technology to retrieve the crude oil.”

What my petroleum engineer friend said make me realized that petroleum is still safely locked and stored down there. The problem hindering us from getting it is the technology. I’m glad I knew that and until now I still subscribe petroleum, hydrocarbon and offshore related magazines to keep myself updated with current technologies concerning petroleum upstream.

Yesterday, I came across this website called Bedrock Energy Development. It is pretty interesting because it introduces a new way of extracting petroleum…

The tag line say it all… “Laser Oil Well Drilling: a look into the future of the search for petroleum”

Laser will be employed to explore oils. Honestly, I never imagine laser application for the oil and gas industry specifically in exploration. However, this new tech has given the world some gleam of hope and that’s very pretty impressive. Despite the desperate commercialization of green biomass and biodiesel fuel, the demand required by the world could not be met by these renewable technology yet. More and more research are yet to be done to ensure commercial viability of the green technology. Without doubt, the world still need fossil petroleum for energy at least for the next 50 years.

It was stated that lasers have the ability to melt rock in a way that will create a casing in a wellbore, eliminating the expense of setting steel well casing. A laser system could also poses a variety of sensors and imaging systems that could communicate with the surface via fiber optic cable. A new study will obtain precise measurements of the energy required to transmit light from surface lasers with enough power to bore through rocks as deep as 20,000 feet or more beneath the surface. This has certainly ease the traditional and complicated process of drilling to position the wellbore that will be then connected to platform for further processing.

Besides that, another aspect of the new study will be to determine if lasers can be used in the presence of drilling fluids. In most wells drilling “mud” is injected into the borehole to wash out rock cuttings and keep water and other fluids from seeping into the wellbore. The technical challenge will be to determine whether too much laser energy is expended to clear away the fluid where the drilling is occurring.

Well, despite of all this, the laser approach may be the answer to our mysterious technology to dig out the petroleum from stubborn earth crust. Let’s hope for the laser technology application success so we can still enjoy petrol and its’ derivative products at an affordable price.

Basic rule of thumb: less petroleum, house hold price including petrol will rise, and people will suffer…

Steam-Heat Exchanger from Schlumberger

Steam-Heat Exchanger is a product from Schlumberger which is useful and suitable for offshore refinery operation.

It is used to raise the temperature of well effluents to prevent hydrate formation, reduce viscosity, and break down emulsions for efficient separation of oil and water. Because the steam heat exchangers virtually eliminates fire risk, they are used on offshore platforms and other work conditions where safety regulation do not permit the use of indirect fir heaters.

The fire heat exchanger requires an adequate steam supply for operation. Some rigs have sufficient heat supply, but usually a steam generator is required.

What is Biomass and Is it a Practical Source of Energy?

Biomass is any organic material that is made by plants and animals. This includes all parts of plants, animal flesh and excretions such as manure. Biomass in rich in energy that can be used for fuel which is called biofuel.

Fossil fuels are also a biomass since it's believed that they come from ancient plants and animals. But usually when people speak of biomass they are talking about material produced from sources that are alive now or were recently.

Biofuel is often talked about as though it was a new technology that we can use in the future to help solve our energy supply problems. But humans have been using biofuel since the beginning of humanity. The food we eat is a form of biofuel that we wouldn't exist without. Humans have also used plant materials such as wood wax and whale oil as a fuel to burn for heat and light for thousands of years.


Newer technologies have allowed us to use biomass for making other biofuels. Biomass can be burned to power electric generators or made into methane, alcohol or bio diesel for powering our cars. These processes are energy intensive meaning a lot of energy is lost in converting biomass into the other forms of fuel or energy. Because of this these biofuels have not been cost effective or practical.

With all the technology going into biofuel research the one form of biofuel that we have been using since ancient times still remains the most efficient and practical. Burning biomass such as wood for direct heating is still the most efficient.

Instead of focusing on trying to use biomass to fuel our cars and generate electricity we may be better off using it to heat our homes and buildings. Firewood may not be practical for most people but pellets made from wood and other biomass may be. Burning pellets is cost effective, clean and may be the most efficient way to utilize the energy in biomass.

For those who want to use biomass as a renewable energy source heating with wood or other biomass pellets are practical and economical and the technology and distribution systems are already available.

The future relies on chemical engineers

Are you a chemical engineer? Are you a chemical engineering student? Are you planning to take chemical engineering as you major in university or college? If yes, I bet you are making yourself an important force to the future of the world. If you see around you, almost everything that you can see must and should involve chemical engineering. Although chemical engineering is a very diverse discipline, there are more area to focused in if you want to contribute to the future.

Without doubt, it is becoming increasingly necessary and imperative for man to be able to manipulate the world around him in order to thrive, and as we continue to thrive we have to learn how to undo the damage we have done in past years. Chemical engineers are the only tool we have for new research and development in almost every field, including the bio related and medical field, environmental science, research science, and a large portion of the research done in the technological fields.

Microelectronics involves itself in the development of technology that will aid those in the medical professions. They study plasma processes, which are used in a number of treatments, and laser technology, which enables doctors to perform surgeries faster, more safely, and more affordably that ever before. They also study super-molecular self-assembly and organization and colloidal systems, all for use in the continued study of the human body and how it grows and develops. These technologies are enabling doctors to treat patients quicker and cheaper, which is more than necessary when one considers the dramatic shortage of doctors and nurses and the ever-growing list of people needing medical treatment. These technologies help an entire host of issues; the decrease in cost leads to health insurance becoming more affordable and therefore more accessible to the everyday citizen. Easier recovery times and safer surgeries lead to a higher survival rate and a better standard of living.

Technological development is not the sole focus of chemical engineering, however. Biochemical engineering involves the study of mammalian tissues, virus removal from blood, protein manipulation, and a wide array of genetic engineering technologies. These research scientists are leading the way to a number of cures and treatments that will improve the health of America Imagine a day when HIV/AIDS, cancers, and a wide array of terminal and debilitating conditions have been eradicated or are easily treated.

The focus of chemical engineering spans more than just the medical field, however. Almost all students majoring in chemical engineering study the use of resources like oil and natural gas and can delve into research for more efficient methods of obtaining these fuels and exercising them to their full potential. In today's world, with gas prices fluctuating and the populous dissatisfied, no profession could be in higher demand.

In view of that, as a chemical engineer, I decided to get myself involve in the green based research that involve the utilization of biodiesel and biomass energy which is more environmentally friendly and at the same time help to reduce the dependence to nonrenewable energy. I'm aiming to establish a feasible process and technology and hopefully later commercialize it.

In the other hand, military forces in certain countries, are interested in chemical engineers that specialize in polymer engineering, which is the study of the synthesis of different chemicals, and process engineering, the study of catalyst development and fault detection and control, as they can work with the military to develop weapons.

Chemical Engineers are closer than ever to finding cures for deadly diseases, defending our nation from hostile countries, and improving the standard of living for citizens. Those that invest their time and money in a chemical engineering program will not be disappointed, as there is an endless spectrum of meaningful, important careers, opportunities, and chances to shine.

Hence, to the younger generation, if you are still studying or plan to pursue to tertiary education, chemical engineering is an area loaded with challenging and interesting opportunities. I don't believe the recent economic turmoil effects the demand for chemical engineers. The world needs and is desperate for chemical engineers. That's what I told a final year chemical engineering student who approached me and was worried about getting a job in the 3rd quarter this year. Don't worry, a fantastic career is waiting for you. It's just a matter of time...
